The holding of this first edition of Entrepreneurship and SME Week is of paramount importance.
It makes it possible to initiate a strengthening of the support system for SMEs. And this is all the more necessary in view of the weight of SMEs in the economic fabric of the WAEMU countries. In fact, depending on the country, these represent between 80% and 95% of the companies listed. However, they have difficulty accessing financing, especially medium and long-term loans. As a result, their contribution to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and job creation is limited.
From Mali’s independence in 1960 to the start of the 1980s, the state was the main, if not the only employer. The private sector thus reinvigorated was to take over by becoming the engine of economic development and employment potential.
It is in this vision that FARE is set up to facilitate the creation of SMEs and jobs.
Faced with the imperatives of consolidating public finances, streamlining budget management, stabilizing the economy and promoting free enterprise, the State, supported by technical and financial partners, had to initiate structural reforms and institutions from 1982 which resulted in:
